What is Media and Information Literacy?
UNESCO defines Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as “a set of competencies that enable people to meaningfully engage with all forms of media and content providers – from TV, film, print, to social media, libraries and museums.”
What is the approach of Out of The Box To MIL?
In today’s dynamic digital landscape, OOTB emphasizes the need to teach and promote MIL that prioritizes critical analysis and evaluation of prevalent media texts and technologies—and viewing it as a means to enhance civic participation and democracy. Critical and civic-oriented MIL is a key framework in addressing disinformation, digital rights violations, and other present and future threats to our rights and democracy.
Critical and Civic-oriented MIL
Critical inquiry
- Critically analyze and evaluate media they encounter and consume daily
- Embrace self-awareness, intellectual humility, and open-mindedness
Alternative Media Production
- Responsibly and ethically use media technologies
- Create and celebrate progressive media that challenge the status quo
Digital Citizenship
- Foster meaningful connections online while ensuring digital safety, security and well-being of self and others
- Embrace shared civic values over particular group interest
Out of The Box Theory of Change
Out of The Box is guided by its Theory of Change that envisions a Philippine society where people of all ages and backgrounds critically consume and responsibly use and create media in all forms; and engage government, media, and the tech industry to act in the interest of human rights.
